We, the Indians

Posted by Kumar Chetan on March 22, 2006

One of my collegue asked me. Infact he was confirming.
“23rd is holiday.”
I looked at him with a question mark on my face.
“Why”
“23rd is a Governmentt Holiday.”
“So…?”
My reactions confirmed that there was no chance of holiday.
“No, I was just telling.”
“Do you know why 23rd is a govt holiday?”
“No, actually my dad told me that 23rd is his holiday…”
The guy had no answer.
But I have.
23rd is a black day in Indian history. We lost Bhagat Singh.
For my friends less informed, the Bhagat Singh is same guy whome Mr. MK Gandhi could have saved. Who could have changed the face of India. The guy suffered same fate as other opposer of MK Gandhi suffered. Nodbody remembers them. Very few care about Bhagat Singh and those who care just came to know about Bhagat Singh after watching Ajay Devgun as Bhagat Singh or more recently after watching Rang De Basanti.
There is one problem with Indians. We don’t value our heros. We need a holiday associated with their death or birthday. If no holiday we dont remeber them. I hav been very much inspired by Bhagat Singh and his philospohy. My athiesm is due to some of his thoughts. 23rd is not the day of just remebering and reading the biography of Bhagat Singh but its the day to sit back and think what have we done to the country for which Bhagat Singh gave his life.
Although I can not compare myself with Bhagat Singh but I am serving my motherland. I am not littering my city. Paying taxes, even when I know the tax I pay will be used to buy laptops for our politicians who don’t know what a laptop is. I prefer buying Indian products. Above all, even after offer for free immgration consultation, I still dont want to apply for any work visa.
Putting India’s point and telling people that Indians are not cheap labor. They cost less and give quality work.
This is an incomplete post…
Why?

**We need a holiday associated with their death or birthday

I dun u’stand why someone’s death is commemorated by a holiday? Rather we should al be working on that day to honor his hard-working spirit..anyway thats besides the point…

**Above all, even after offer for free immgration consultation, I still dont want to apply for any work visa.

I applaud u for that. However u cant call ppl who leave the Indian shores traitors, can u? :) It depends on what each and everyone wants in life…

    Keshi.

One point said by Keshi, Still the post is unfinished.
Yes Keshi, you are right. If all those mrtyrs come to know that we “celebrate” their B’day or death anniversary, they feel ashamed. None of them wanted us to stop working and remember them.
Regarding the Immigration part, Keshi you may be a an exceptional case, but still the majority of Indians want to immigrate to “Amreeka”, “Kannada”, “UK” or “Ostralia”. They say, ths system here is pathetic, but did they ever try to rectify it.
    Still the post is unfinished.
    Thanks for your comments.

** They say, ths system here is pathetic, but did they ever try to rectify it.

u got a valid point…alot of ppl migrate overseas w.o. even trying giving it a try…I agree and that’s slack.

    Keshi.

    way 2 go, buddy! gr8!

  5. Kumar Chetan Thu, 23 Mar 2006 12:47:00 EST

Divya thanks for ur comments. But the post is still incomplete.
We are honest, tax paying but still we have ppl like Laloo Yadav in power. If some one argues that Laloo is from Bihar a less developed state then we have JayalaliTHa from Tamilnadu, a place where ppl are undoubtldy more educated.
When I go to exercise my right of voting I always end up voting for less corrupt candidate.

  6. divya Thu, 23 Mar 2006 14:15:00 EST

c, v cannot practically take the responsibility n guarantee of the whole world, v can just do our li’l bit.n if v r able 2 do it, v r pretty successful in making dis world a better place !!!

  7. PuNeEt Thu, 23 Mar 2006 14:58:00 EST

    holiday wont do much good
it will stop the business dealings to banks to stock markets for a day which in neways not good

we indians r used to having too much of holidays

bt i agree with u that v dont value our heros…

am always a Bhagat Singh Fan…
I never liked MK Gandhi nor Congress…

i still feel had we got independence the way bhagat singh n subash chandra bose wanted… by fighting…n sacrifice… India wud have been a better country today…

    ne ways its history now…

    Nice post

    Cheers

    The post is still incomplete.
Thanks again Divya and thanks Puneet. Puneet you said u dont like MK Gandhi or Congress. I dont like any politician.
2 of my cousins are lawyers and they differ on nearly all points except the Indian ploitics. As you said in ur recent post we beleive wat we r told, we have seen biased history. I have never seen any refrence to the history of J&K and North east in my history books. So we end up calling some one from Mizoram or Manipur Chinese. But we know a lot about MK Gandhi, Nehru family and congress.
    The post is still incomplete.

Nice post and indeed thought provoking !

    Chetan…as u said…even I dont like any politicians for that matter !

Congratz….and it is fact that u r doing something good for the mother country !

  10. Kumar Chetan Thu, 23 Mar 2006 15:37:00 EST

    Thanks a lot sumathi.
I am glad that some is really provoked and hope that her thoughts do not die with sun setting in west. We, the Indian get a rush only after wathing movies or reading good posts. but we loose all energy as soon as we have to face the govt setup.
I really dont like any politicians but still we need some one to rule us. So I vote, I vote for lesser corrupt or one whose record is less tainted.
    The post is still incomplete.

  11. harry Thu, 23 Mar 2006 16:49:00 EST

you pretty much summed up my own views…exactly! :D

  12. Kumar Chetan Thu, 23 Mar 2006 16:51:00 EST

thanks a lot harry, I always admire fonzters for their youthfull attempts.
I may have summed up your thoughts but I am still not satisfied. The post is still incomplete

  13. chandni Fri, 24 Mar 2006 02:02:00 EST

Hey…that’s a thought provoking post…however I want to ask you about the latter part of ur post..

When you give all these examples of using indian products and going abroad..are you then saying that those who do use products from elsewhere or travel abroad…are not passionate about India?

I just want to understand ur perspective, hence the question..no offence!

  14. Kumar Chetan Fri, 24 Mar 2006 08:40:00 EST

hey chandni thanks a lot, really am impressed by your question.
I normally do not reply to comments. But as I said my post is incomplete, this wil b completed by pepole like you.
    Regarding people leaving India.
Beleive me the whole of the Punjab wants to immigrate to Canada or UK. People here will do anything to go abroad. Anything. Those same people when reached Canada will do anything to survive. In India they will not do anything, coz only for them system is corrupt. You may have observed that India is becoming a super power, even when our system is corrupt. So they are leaving India not coz system si corrupt only coz they want to leave India.
Regarding using Indian Products, this may soound bit stupid to you. If I have to buy shoes I will prefer Indian brands, and believe me in my life of 26 years I never baught Reebok or Nike shoes. What is the point? I want my hard earned money to remain in India. Thats all. This may sound like typical RSS guy’s statment, but I am not from RSS.
PS: For people less informed RSS stands for Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh, normalyy known as “Sangh” in media and is major contributor in BJP Leadership.

  15. chandni Fri, 24 Mar 2006 10:43:00 EST

    hi kumar! thanks for replying!!!

I understand what u’re saying…it isnt stupid to feel or act that way..but can we hold it against people who do otherwise??

what u say about Punjab may be true..but there are so many people who do these things and still feel like you..is it fair to them?? I live abroad currently..but i know for a fact that I feel a lot more than most people…

Its more than what shoe you wear!!!

  16. Kumar Chetan Fri, 24 Mar 2006 14:54:00 EST

Chandni, really good to see some one coming up with thoughts.
Do wearing nike or reebok shoes means am against India?
No. I put my posts in english. So doesn’t that mean am against Hindi or India. No. I will agree with the fact that patriotism is more than shoes you wear. Our leadership is wearing khadi all the time and look what they are doing…
But still we, the Indians, crave for “phoren” products even if Indian products far more superior quality are available. Then we may term it as personal taste. But if a soldier can die for my country I can change my taste for my motherland. Its simple.
    The post is still incomplete…

  17. Abrar Sat, 25 Mar 2006 02:43:00 EST

Even I did not know anyhthing about Bhagat Sign till I saw Rang De Basanti……. which reminds me I have to see that Ajay Devgan movie!! He seems inspirational!!

But your right, even in our history books in Pakistan, they mention all the Muslims and Hindus and their efforts before independence.. but there is no mention of Bhagat Singh!! However, all details of Ghandi are there in full detail!!

  18. Dawn....सेहर Sat, 25 Mar 2006 05:06:00 EST

Nice post …very thought provoking too :)
I knew this will come some where…as March 23rd is remembered for Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru…indeed one must pay respect to them ..but holiday would be…I dont know …it can be done as holiday for kids…that way the value of it can be understood well by the next generation…!
People who are staying in the country ..dont care…then why people who left country long back…how can one call them traitors…? I know some of my friends..whose grand-parents came to islands on a ship as slaves that too at the age of 13-14…what would you call them as traitors? they came out of India for better prospects…it will surprise you that even though they left India in those era…still they carry the culture and tradition in much better way that the people living in India.
So..rather than distracting from the main issue…blaming at others…or even eachother is not the solution.
I think Indians they are good at blaming and then fighting hence the middle man comes and tries to rule..!
We should always learn from history…but not repeat history.

It was indeed a good post..Thnx dear

    cheers

Abrar and Fizaam thanks for comments.
Abrar, Rgarding Gandhi, I just oppose his policies. Not personal grudges againat that man. But it is really painful to see no refrence to the other heros who gave their lives for the motherland.
And a very very very good point raised by Indians settled abroad. Keshi, Chandni and Fizaa, very few people are like you. Very few. 5% or 10%. Max 15%. Yes this makes a difference but come to India and see the actual picture. I see people around me doing anything for a visa.
One point I will make clear.
I am not calling anyone traiter.
We blame rotten system for everything wrong but do nothing to rectify it. And more over we don’t value our heros. Lets for one moment forget the independenc movement and see the modern history. Kargill. Do we remember who got the PVC. My batchmate were up in their arms and one even came to blows as I was not agreeing with them on the numbers of PVC given in Kargill. Very shamefull.
And true fizaa, very true u said. We, the Indians, master the art of blaming each other. Once I told Abrar that fighting with own brothers is culture of South Asea. Indian Crab Mentality.
    The post is still incomplete…

  20. Dawn....सेहर Sat, 25 Mar 2006 21:46:00 EST

    Hi…:)
I dont know what is the element that you are trying to look to complete this post or topic…!
But, as I said…different individuals have different aspirations and they strive for it…and believe me when I saw Rang De Basanti…I thgt tht was a lesson for Indians that…some British gal remembered the three great heroes…and came to India to make a movie and how many were initially willing to do so? also when they did agree they did for that gal :)……
Its Indian tradition…to treat less the people from our own parts…ghar ki murgi daal barabar…and we treat the guests like a god :)…atithi devo bhav :D

I look at this from this point…that we can always educate people…bring awareness…and then we can remember…people should build statue of these heroes…I hv not been to Punjab ..may they hv there …all I say is the day should be remarked and one should at least give 1 mint silence to observe in respect to those heroes!
I understand Kargil was a horrible thing to even discuss and remember…as I was in India that time and the kind of news that one could hear was very painful…war has not given anything good…we must learn from history always!!!!
Kumar…I dont know what is it making this topic incomplete…a solution is something too optimistic to look at…but at least we know what should be done :) what say?
    Cheers

  21. Kumar Chetan Sat, 25 Mar 2006 22:26:00 EST

    Thanks a lot Fizaa.
For the sake of posting more stuff on my blog I will say this is complete. There is only one point I want to make. Why do we forget our heroes? We do remeber them
    a) Foreigners highlight them in their research work, I call this as imported.
    b) Media for its TRP ratings, they always need to present some thing to compete
    c) Bollywood for earning more revenue and awards
    d) Or more worst when there is no holiday on “Shahedi Diwas”
Only people who think like me came forward and read and commented and helped me find an answer. I am not satisfied. What is wrong with our attitude? Why the “Ghar ki murgi is daal barabar”? I am not balming any one. Neither I am trying to say that I am great as I think for my country. But Why do we always forget that Indipendence movement gained momentum after Bhagat Singh. Why do we forget that Mr. Gandhi could have saved Bhagat Singh. There are many controversial issues I want to discuss. I want people, basically we the Indians not to wait for another “RDB” to be released to remeber our freedom fighters. Thats all.
No more further comments now but am not satisfied…
So the post is still there…incomplete.

We use our celebrities as an excuse to fulfill our fantasies or finishing pending works, people wait for such holidays not for sake of those people but for their own sake.Whether its 14th of August in Pakistan or 15th in India.

Bhagat Singh adn Gen Bakht both fought against Farangis in 19th centuries.I would love to know how Bakht khan is presented in indian text books.

Kumar nice post man, maza aya parh kar :)

  23. Kumar Chetan Sun, 26 Mar 2006 23:25:00 EST

Thanks Adnan, You know my view points on many issues. I have to hold many posts just to keep discussion going on this topic.
    why do we forget hero?
Its true and I will invite any one to contest me on this point that Bhagat Singh and lot others are responsible for freedom of India and ofcourse Pakistan. You mentioned Gen Bakht. I am sorry I never read about General Bakht. Really feeling bad for this.
And I will highlight this point again. Why do we forget our heros?
Still sad to say this post is incomplete.

  24. Adnan Siddiqi Sun, 26 Mar 2006 23:29:00 EST

u dont need ot feel bad dude, as Abrar said,i heard about Bhagat sing first time when saw tralor of ajay devgan’s movie,as i had mentioned on my blog we have been taught different history for same region,Whos correct,God knows better i have doubt on what i haev read in my books.

Our ideals are now filmi stars ,like sharukh khan,Keanu Reeves etc etc,its not our fault,we have been forced to forget our real heroes, curse upon politicians who altr history for their own sake.

  25. Kumar Chetan Sun, 26 Mar 2006 23:40:00 EST

    Adnan, thanks again.
The Matrix movie was not simply a special effect movie. It was a philosophy. We all really live in a matrix. The matrix this time is not developed by machines but by our system. In India, if BJP is in power Congress and other will allege that history has been “Saffronised”. But when Congress is in power, it will not miss any chance to do its own share of damage to Indian hostory. We know everything about MK Gandhi, Veer Savarkar and even about Nathu Ram Godse but we dont know much about Netaji, Shastri ji and Patel. Yes we have movies who show all these gr8 leaders but how many times we go and wath these movies. Bhagat Singh was famous as Ajay Devgun played his role. I remembered whole of the Punjab was bearing Bhagat Singh style moustaches. What now? Now after RDB every one is awakend and wants to “Be a rebel”

  26. Dawn....सेहर Tue, 28 Mar 2006 06:49:00 EST

for what you replied to me…I hve only one more thing to add and that is…as new things are coming up …new generation doesnt see what happened in past…what gave them this awesome present…n to keep that aligned…one need to keep bringing the memories of the past…& I think movies…marching all bring these spirit of elements…which always need to be there otherwise it will be like…out of sight is out of mind thing…so ppl like u who do care should spread the msg and I think u have done a gr8 job by posting this post :)
    good job buddy
    cheers
