Tanglish - Edited !?

Added on 27th Oct 2008 - I never thought my rants will offend some one. I knew this one may irritate Tamil people. I am not against Tamil. But there are things that make me wonder why only in Chennai? Why people in Chennai refuse to speak Hindi? Why there is no sign board in Hindi? Leave Hindi aside some times its hard to locate a sign board even in English? Why? A comment from Kamal says he is genius and I am a fool, his blog says that whatever is there on his blog is correct and if you dont agree with him you are wrong. Same here. If you find some thing offending, sorry, but you are wrong. Get a life.

Ch33r5 ;-)

When I first read Jayalalitha’s name I was amazed, why there is an extra H in Lalita. Anyway. I used to tell my self and never paid attention.

Now, when I am in Chennai, I hav just stopped asking my self why there is an extra H, in fact I suspect if I am reading a correct name if it doesn’t carry an extra H with T. Oh yes one more thing, here in Chennai, it is pronounced as HETCH not ETCH, like YEMM not EMM, YO not O and so many other words. So here is a list of words and phrases which have made me think, where am I:

  • anything that sounds as T contains extra H, for example Amit will become AmitH, Tilak will become THilak, Thyagaraya Nagar, the famous T. Nagar and so on.
  • Tandoor is Thandoori or Tantoori
  • No problem is nothing problem
  • Straight is Stait
  • Cotton is Cotone
  • Peas are spelled as pies, piece or some times pees, thank God I never found a menu with Pees Pulao :P
  • Hey I even found Fruit Juice is Frut Joos, this was intentional I know.
  • You can find many Lite Shops in Chennai selling decorative Lights.
  • Added on 27th Oct, Sprouts spelled as “Sprouds

I agree, we in North have same stuff but man, these guys are giving tough competition to our Punjabi guys where bulb is spelled as “ballab”.

And I didn’t invent the term Tanglish, its on Wiki competing with Hinglish.

Gaad knows who will win. ;-)

well, the name is Jayalalitha :)

regarding “h”, the word ends with the “tha”, not “ta”. In Tamil, we never tend to use “ta” much…so “h” gets added.

I’m appalled at your ignorance of the local language..sorry for you!
For your info bro Since Tamil has the letter THA most names end with an extra ‘H’. And when will you guys ever learn to stop generalizing.

For one thing I’m seriously not able to see your problem with an extra H…and your supposedly smarty pant comment about it being pronounced ‘Hetch’

wow..look here everyone Mr.Chetan thinks he is a frigging genius..tch tch can’t help you bro..if I had to list out word for word the mistakes that I see in You guys then you would know but I believe every one will be influenced in some way or the other by their mother tongue..so I feel its wrong to comment.

Ever wondered why the French speak the way they do,the Latinos, dude…you may come up with an explanation so as to say you were only pointing out your observation or just mentioning things..but it doesn’t seem that way..

well for one thing you can even delete this comment but let me tell you your blog title suits your post perfectly ’shamel;ess self promotion’

aur bhai sirf ISHTYLE se likhna kaafi nahi9 hai..soch samajkar likho …

And you also seem not to know the difference between Madras bashai and Tanglish….. gaad save him..peace![;)]

P.S sure you can delete the above two posts….[:)]

yup…you were right about that part “I removed that part in my blog which says ‘why everything i like is great..etc..etc” yeah it was bad..and also i removed my link back to you and would like to delete u’r coment too..coz my intention was not to create a flame war either..

See chetan the point is its not about laughin at oneself … sure i can do that..everytime you see a hindi film we come across Tamils being portrayed funnily.. ok once twice..fine but time and again its a bit too much to bear..
last night I saw the “sidhu’s show” the gr8 Indian laughter challenge where Tamils were made fun of like anything..

see I dont like it when westerners still thing India is a land of Snakes only and beggars..sure we are more than that right..

and when you say you dont see hindi on sign boards..There are larger issues here chetan …Tamil for all its glory of being an old languge is dying..you dont know that…and its not the people who refuse to speak hindi its the politicians who refuse it for their political gain..when ever they feel they are low on popluarity they take up tamil nationalism..tamil this and that..I hate that too..i want to be accepted as an Indian too…

so when you say ” I knew this may irritate Tamil people ” why do you have to write it..it does irritate us..
Its not jus about this post but also about u’r previos posts since u came to chennai…u dont seem to like anything here..U may not take sardar jokes easily but there are people who dont like it right…I believe u are not a sardar but still..so when people dont like lets not say em…Its jus that i dint like this post and would be very very greatful if u considered removing this post…for all you know there have been a few blogs that i’ve been following like u’rs ..do consider removing this post..but at the end of the day its u’r wish.. happy staying in chennai..

I wonder where the discussion is heading towards. Seems like a trivial issue has been blown out of proportion like anything with emotions at the highest peak. I believe it wasn’t pointed with a bad intention rather was posted with humor as a bottom line. I believe everybody likes to explore things, keeping notes of few amazing ones and then sharing it with friends. Some takes the precedence and some does not. Simple.

Its nothin about a community or an area rather it is some humour finding which I am sure everybody likes to get into irrespective of the place. Besides, we all are Indian and as Kumar says it always ….Proud to be an Indian.

I remember a funny incident where a Hindi speaker was teasing a mallu and she said “Mallus have jeero pronunciation skillj” - it was hilarious :-)))

But yeah, every Indian state has its own weird accents - natural I guess. The native language you speak affects your English too.
