When I tell people I am from Ludhiana, Punjab they ask me, are you from Punjab?
Why?
Coz, like for North Indians, every South Indian is Madrasi, for South Indians, every Punjabi is Sarda or Sikh. Its a surprise for them when I tell them not only Hindus are in Punjab, we have Muslims and Christians too! In fact when I tell them that this Diwali my mom organised recitation of Sukhmani Sahib, a holy script in Sikhism they look strangely at me, more strangely when I tell them Punjabis not Sikhs or Hindus visit “Dargahs” every Thursday and Punjabis not Sikhs or Hindus, visit Mata Naina Devi or Punjabis not only Sikhs regard Golden Temple as a sacred place…or… too much surprise for them.
But I tell them proudly and I can repeat all this n times a day ![]()
…and some times I wonder, Punjab have seen much darker days…

hmm…hindus considering Golden Temple as sacred is news to me as well!
Absolutely true.
I was thinking about the same thing a few days back. Hindu, Sikh or Muslim – Punjabis don’t care about this at all. Even though we may discriminate between Jatt Sikhs and Khatri Sikhs, but never between a Sikh or a Hindu or a Muslim.
Punjabizm. Pride. Honour.
